Getting Your Retro On at 1st Class Finds

This week's featured Hot Spot is a local shop filled with mid-century finds just begging to be purchased and put into your apartment.  Furniture, lighting, wall decor, accessories... this retro-focused establishment sells it all.

When you read our Mid-Century Style Spotlight post, you'll know we're a big fan of the warm wood tones, bold colors, clean lines, and curvaceous silhouettes that make up retro decor.  (And if you didn't read it... well, you should head over and read it after you finish this one!)  It's easy to mix mid-century flair into your contemporary decor for an eclectic look.  A long, low sofa here, a modular shelving unit there.  A sleek dresser here, a sunburst mirror or clock there.

Movember | Moustaches: They Grow On You

Alright fellas, show of hands. (...errr, comments?)  We "moustache" you a question.  How many of you have heard of No-Shave November.  Thought so.  That's a no-brainer.  But have you stumbled upon No-Shave November's hairy but arguably more gentlemanly cousin?  Movember!  We've noticed the increase in moustaches on the faces of residents, neighbors, friends, and co-workers.  To get to the "root" of this hairy issue, we did a little research.

During the 30 days of November, men are encouraged to grow and women are encouraged to support the Mo (moustache).  Movember raises awareness and funds for men's health, specifically prostrate and testicular cancer.  Who knew a moustache could have so much power and do so much good!

Let's start out with some video, shall we?

And now for a nifty Mo-powered infographic:

Inspiration Board: Cabin Fever

cabinfever

With autumn past its peak and winter nearly upon us, there's no better time than now to cozy up your home sweet apartment for the cold months.  And what's cozier than a cabin in the woods?  For this inspiration board, we pulled together natural textures, wintry neutrals, woodsy accents, and a few hints of sparkle to create a rustic, homey retreat fit for fireside evenings drinking hot chocolate.

How can you can get this look for your apartment?

1. Stencil "Welcome" onto a worn, wooden plank for an inviting sign to hang near your door.  Or purchase this Rustic Welcome Sign.

2. Add creature comfort to your sofa with a pillow featuring the striking silhouette of a woodland species, like this Moose Oblong Pillow.  (A deer silhouette would be charming, too!)

3. Sip on your hot cocoa from a cute critter mug.  This little raccoon mug will steal your heart, but the First and Forest Mug is also available as a red fox, chipmunk, and squirrel.

Mid-Century | Style Spotlight

For our first Style Spotlight, we're featuring Mid-Century Modern.  Sometimes bygone eras make a big comeback in decor.  Dominated by warm wood tones, bold colors, and clean lines contrasting with curvaceous silhouettes, you may recognize Mid-Century design notes from Mad Men, oldies television shows like Leave it to Beaver, and even The Jetsons.  Retro.  Vintage.  Groovy.  Whatever you call Mid-Century, we've got inspiration for working it into your apartment decor.

(Images via: Left, Center, Right)
Love rummaging through thrift stores, antique shops, garage sales, and your grandma's attic?  Keep your eyes open for classic Mid-Century pieces like curvy chairs, streamlined sofas, and modular storage units.  But don't stop there!  Vintage-inspired pieces reminiscent of "the good ol' days" are available in modern day stores like Target and Ikea, too.

No Candles Allowed? Add Ambiance & Aroma with 12 Alternatives

Who doesn't love the flickering light and fragrant scent of a burning candle?  Candles add instant romance, coziness, and aroma to a space.  However, candles are more than likely not allowed in your apartment space.  Besides the obvious threat of being a fire hazard, the soot from burning candles can also stain and damage the wall and ceiling surfaces.  So what's a renter to do when in need of a little ambiance and fragrance?  (Febreze only does so much...)

Although we don't allow burning candles in our Haverkamp Properties, we understand your desire to make your space to feel like home.  To help with that, we've rounded up twelve alternatives to candles.  These substitutions won't set your space aflame or leave sooty residue on your walls and ceiling.  Plus, staying out of trouble with the landlord and getting most of your security deposit back doesn't hurt either.

Featured Color: Turquoise

Turquoise. Teal. Aquamarine. Whatever you call it, this blue-green shade steals the show.  Turquoise combines the calming effects of blue with the exhilarating effects of green.  It calls to mind tranquil tropical waters, vacation, and summertime.  (We could use some of those cool, Caribbean thoughts as the temperatures drop here in Iowa.)  Named by Pantone as Color of the Year back in 2010, turquoise isn't going away anytime soon.  Plus, it's easy to pair with other colors.  Turquoise adds a burst of vibrant color to a neutral or black-and-white palette.  It mixes well with other bright hues like hot pink, orange, and yellow-green.  Or for a more toned down effect, stick with deeper blues or greens.

Want to bring a pop of turquoise into your decor?  We've rounded up 11 turquoise items under $50 (plus a 12th splurge item!) that will add a splash of this oceanic hue to your living space.

1. Mingle these gorgeous Aquamarine Sultan Canisters (ZGallerie) among perfume bottles on your dresser or vanity top.  2. Frame friends and family members in Aquamarine Mimosa Frames (ZGallerie) to display front-and-center on your bookcase.
