Chicago Dogs & Gyros at The Flying Wienie

This weeks Cedar Rapids is as fly as it gets.  We stopped by The Flying Wienie for a fast and scrumptious lunch.

The Flying Wienie's building was originally a gas station back in 1929.  The structure retained its garage doors by integrating them as windows.  Much of the interior echoes back to an earlier era, too, with wooden floors, original architectural elements, and vintage character.

Airplanes galore hang throughout The Flying Wienie.  Parachutes and planes overhead.  Vintage prints and flight posters.  Vintage character is alive and well here, too.  Arcade games, an old gas tank, and retro chairs.  In the dining room, you can even play old-school PacMan or Mario while eating if you sit at one of the two arcade game tables.

The Flying Wienie serves up a variety of sandwiches, hot dogs, and soups.  They also make their own Brat, Italian, and Polish sausages.  Haleigh ordered the (massive!) gyro and fries on the side, while I went for the famous Chicago Dog (a Vienna All-Beef dog topped on a fresh bun topped with mustard, dill spears, onion, tomatoes, relish, sport peppers, and celery salt) with fries.  We also got to sample two soups: chicken & dumplings and beef & bean.  Fast, filling, and delicious!

For the fans, The Flying Wienie even offers "Wienie Water" and lip balm sporting their catchy logo.

Have a hankering for a hot dog?  The Flying Wienie is located at 103 8th Avenue SW (the corner of 1st Street and 8th Avenue, one block south of the police station) in Cedar Rapids.  For more information and a look at the full menu, check out The Flying Wienie website.

Fired Up at Cactus Bob's BBQ

Who can resist mouthwatering, all-American BBQ?  Definitely not Haleigh and I.  While in Johnston, we zeroed in on Cactus Bob's BBQ Corral to feature as a Hot Spot that's literally... well, hot!  Cactus Bob's began as a love of competition style BBQ shared by two best friends, Robert Prince and Craig DeDecker.  For two years, the BBQ connoisseurs perfected their rubs, sauces, and recipes. Cactus Bob's opened in June of 2005 and has been serving up delicious, homemade BBQ ever since.

Enjoy the feeling of your tongue being on fire?  Cactus Bob's offers the popular Showdown Challenge.  For a $6 challenge fee, you attempt to eat a brisket or pork sandwich smothered with "showdown" sauce... in 10 minutes or less without taking a drink. Winners go down in BBQ history, get featured on the "Wall of Dangerous Eating Desperadoes," and receive a free Cactus Bob's t-shirt.

Haleigh and I went halfsies on The Big Pig (succulent sliced pork shoulder) and The Longhorn (tender Texas-style beef brisket) sandwiches. Plus, we gobbled up fries and slaw on the side.

Next time you get a hankering for BBQ, we highly recommend you head straight for Cactus Bob's located at 5955 Merle Hay Road in Johnston, Iowa.  To find out more about the restaurant's story, mouthwatering menu, and catering options check out the Cactus Bob's BBQ Corral website and give them a "like" on Facebook.

Come & See: Sneak Peek Inside Prairie Pointe

Prairie Pointe Student Living is the newest Haverkamp Properties community.  Construction began in 2012 and we'll be opening up August 2013!  Packed with modern luxuries, amenities, and perks, Prairie Pointe is designed for hassle-free, convenient, and enjoyable student living right next to the DMACC Ankeny campus.

The Ankeny DMACC campus is our neck of the woods.  For residents, that means a 120-second commute from the front door to class.  Besides being close to classes and campus events, residents will live nearby plenty of shopping, entertainment, and dining options.

Coffee-lovers can perk up with a cup of java from our coffee bar (at right). Just beyond that door and window at the back of the room is a theater room!  A nearby popcorn machine ensures that moviegoers will never have to watch on an empty stomach.

There are lots of seating options in the clubhouse.  Residents can bring their laptops over and settle in at the wi-fi bar (at left), meet with friends around one of the round fireside tables, get comfortable on the wrap-around couch, or take a seat at the rustic wood dining table near the coffee bar.

During the cold months, residents will enjoy cozying up to the blazing fireplace while lounging on the comfy, wrap-around couch.  The couch is outfitted with conveniently located USB and electrical outlets for charging laptops and other devices.

Modern, industrial, and rustic design come together in the gorgeous Prairie Pointe clubhouse.  The inviting space offers plenty of options for studying, socializing, and relaxing.  Residents can hit the books, hang out with friends, drink coffee, catch a movie, go tanning, or get a workout here.

Prairie Pointe Student Living spaces feature beautiful laminate hardwood flooring in the living room, tile in the bathroom and kitchen, and carpet in the bedrooms.  The kitchen is stocked with two refrigerators, too.
