Emerald: Pantone Color of the Year

Every year, Pantone selects one color to trend over them all.  Last year, we received a much-needed energy boost from Tangerine Tango. In 2013, we're seeking balance, harmony, and well-being in vibrant, verdant Emerald.

"The most abundant hue in nature, the human eye sees more green than any other color in the spectrum," said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute.  "As it has throughout history, multifaceted Emerald continues to sparkle and fascinate. Symbolically, Emerald brings a sense of clarity, renewal, and rejuvenation, which is so important in today's complex world.  This powerful and universally-appealing tone translates easily to both fashion and home interiors."  (-Pantone website)

Precious stones. Rolling fields. The Emerald City. (The Wizard of Oz was onto something...)  Lucky clovers. This hue deserves to come out for more than just St. Patty's Day and Christmas.  This is Emerald's year.  And there's no better time than winter to start bringing the color into our interiors to remind us of the lush spring and summer to come.

Whether you're looking to turn your apartment into an all-out Emerald City abode or just add some accents of verdant color here and there, here are 15 ways to bring shades of green into your home:

1. Swap out your plain old end table for one in a bold hue, like this green LACK side table.

2. Go a step further with an attention-grabbing coffee table like this slim cocktail table in green that can be used indoors or outdoors.

3. Collect perfume bottles, remote controls, and other clutter (or treat yourself to breakfast in bed) on a lacquered square serving tray in evergreen.

4. Switching up your bedding makes a big change in your bedroom with minimal effort and cost.  We love this SMÖRBOLL duvet cover and pillowcases.

5. The turning of the new year is an ideal time to get organized.  And these Clover cabana bins will do just the trick.  Made of tightly woven plastic, they'll go anywhere and store anything from magazines and school supplies to toiletries and pantry items.  (The pretty green pattern is a plus, too!)

6. We love the cozy idea of an LED flameless candle flickering in this gorgeous, old-fashioned glass.

7. Don't you just love love love green?!  Express that adoration with this 8x10 Love Stencil typography print.

8. Shake things up with the salt and pepper. This pair of retro shakers will make a cute addition to your kitchen counter while adding a pop of green.

9. Coffee tastes even better when sipped from a stylish mug... like this bistro ribbon mug with green and white stripes.

10. Love an expanse of green but can't paint the walls?  Throw down this dark green wool rug for instant color saturation and chic style in your living room or bedroom.

11. Pillows are an easy, inexpensive way to bring color and pattern into your space without totally committing.  (You can swap them in and out as you like!)  We're crushing on this floral green-and-cream pillow for a feminine feel and this abstract zebra-print pillow for a little more pizzazz.

12. Impress guests by serving up martinis in these emerald glasses.  (They'll be green with envy over your hostess-with-the-mostess or host-with-the-most skills!)

13. Scavenge antique stores and thrift shops for old bottles made of green glass.  They'll look great lined up along your bookshelf or mantle.

14. Looking to spruce up your bathroom?  Ditch the boring white towels for a little bit... and bring in vibrant green towels instead!

15. Since our properties are located throughout the wonderful state of Iowa, we can't help but swoon over this sweet Iowa print. It's perfect to share with your significant other, best friend, or a roommate that became a close buddy.
