Severe Weather Apartment Safety

It’s that time of the year again, severe weather is here.  So take precaution and know what to do when bad weather hits and you’re in an apartment with no basement.  Tornados can occur without warning making it important to have a plan laid out in case of emergency.

 Apartment Tornado Safety

If you live in an apartment avoid windows and get to the lowest floor of your building.  From there it’s a good idea to find small centrally located rooms, like a bathroom, closet, stairwell, or interior hallway.  Once in a safe location crouch down as close to the floor as possible and cover your head with your hands.  If you have any type of padding like a mattress of blanket it’s important to cover yourself to protect from falling debris.  It’s common to loose power during severe weather so avoid elevator and keep a flashlight with you. It’s a good idea to keep a safety kit in your apartment incase of emergency. This way if severe weather strikes you’ll know exactly where the essentials are located.  Here are some essentials to pack but it's a good idea to personalize them to your own needs.
·      Flashlight
·      Extra Batteries
·      Portable radio
·      First Aid Kit
·      Water Bottles
·      Identification
·      Cash
Be safe this season and plan ahead.  Be sure to take precaution when severe weather alerts are out.  Being informed and aware is the first step in staying safe.
